On 16th May Pat Latimer, a patient at the York Clinic, is doing the London MoonWalk. The MoonWalk brings together men and women from around the world who power-walk a marathon or half marathon around London. The event aims to raise awareness of breast cancer and money for vital breast cancer causes. The target this year if £6 million.
Pat is planning to do the full 26.2 mile marathon. However, with two months to go she began suffering with back pain. After walking 8 miles – less than a third of the distance to be covered in London – she was in severe pain and unable to continue. Pat then started having acupuncture treatment at the York Clinic with Clinic Director Hugh MacPherson. Over six weeks of treatment, she has been able to gradually extend the distance she walks without pain. At her last visit, on Tuesday 28th April, she reported that at the weekend she had walked 21 miles. She is now well enough to do the marathon. It will only require her to walk an additional 5 mikes to reach the 26 miles of a marathon.
Research has shown that acupuncture is effective for treating back pain. Click here for a video of Clinic Director Hugh MacPherson talking about acupuncture for back pain. Alternatively, see the research he conducted in York that was published in the British Medical Journal.(1)
