Ultrasound scans made by Jennie Longbottom and Mark Maybury at ALIED (Acupuncture Learning and Integrated Educational Development) show what happens in the body when acupuncture is applied. A demonstration at the British Acupuncture Conference recently amazed acupuncturists from York Clinic when they saw blood flow increase at a point behind the knee (Bl40), when needling on the opposite leg. Also a ‘tsunami’ effect in the tissues on the torso (Sp 21) when needling stimulation was given to a point near the ankle (Sp 6). Maybe this is the beginning of our understanding of the mechanism of acupuncture from a biomedical point of view
